Marble Powered Cars
Please consider supporting me :)
These little cars have a marble hidden inside and contacting the floor through a hole in the base. The marble rolls when the car is pushed, and provides momentum so that the car can zoom smoothly across the floor. Great fun and a brilliant craft with the double fun of making the car, and then playing with it afterwards.
Materials
- A piece of A4 card.
- Printer
- Colouring tools - pens, pencils, crayons etc
- Scissors
- Craft knife
- Sticky tape
- Marbles - approximately 3.5cm diameter for the large marble cars and 1.5cm diameter for the small cars. See the photo below for the marble sizes.
Instructions:
1. Print out the template (see below) onto the A4 card. Make sure that you choose to print the template to "Actual size" as the hole for the marble in the base of the car is sized exactly. Don't resize the images.
The template is available below in several forms:
i. Template for one small marble car
ii. Template for four small marble cars
iii. Template for one large marble car
The templates are available in either pdf or jpg formats.

2. Colour in your templates
3. Cut out the cars using scissors and ask an adult to help cut out the marble hole on the base of the car using a craft knife.
4. Score along the fold lines.
Scoring
To score paper or card, you run a blunt instrument along the paper to make a dent. The paper then folds easily along the dent that has been made. You can buy scoring tools, use a ball-point pen that has run out of ink, or another instrument with a small rounded ball end. I use a tool that was made for shaping clay.
You can see the marks that scoring makes, as shown on the back of the card in the picture below.

5. Fold along the scored lines, as shown below.
6. Tape up the cars, leaving the roof open for now, and then place the marbles into the cars.
7. Tape up the car roof
A fraction of the marbles will poke through the hole in the bottom of the car, allowing the marble to contact the floor and power the car.
