The Redbird Shipwreck
The "Redbird" shipwreck is located just off the Hastings Jetty .The Redbird was a tug built in Williamstown in 1915. Constructed of steel, it was originally called "ANVAC". At the end of World War 1, new Federal Government legislation was passed prohibiting the use of this name for commercial reasons. As a result, the name was changed to "Redbird". It was operated by Melbourne Harbour Trust until 1934 when it was sold to a Mr Dyson who planned to convert it into a commercial fishing vessel. However, the vessel was laid up, and some time during the 1940s, it broke free from its moorings during a gale and drifted onto a sandbank to the east of Hastings and was abandoned
