I have an Olympus OMD E-M1 Mark II
I originally switched to the Olympus system (from a Canon) as I needed to reduce the weight of my camera. I have to take especially good care of my back & neck or I suffer the consequences and I often carry my camera along on long hikes. Olympus states "Combine the E-M1 Mark III with our compact M.Zuiko lenses and you have the world’s most portable camera system. Compared to DSLR bodies and lenses, the E-M1 Mark III is half the size, half the weight and considerably less bulky. Enjoy more mobility to take more unique shots. Enjoy the freedom to shoot all handheld. Work longer without tiring. Stow more gear in the same size bag. "(1) There is now an updated version of this camera, the Olympus OMD EM-1 Mark III which I would LOVE to upgrade to - it's on the wish list. An especially cool feature is it's live ND - no need to carry around ND filters to capture the perfect waterfall shot. |

Lenses
M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40MM F2.8 Pro.
While I have several lenses, the one I use the most is the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40MM F2.8 Pro. It is versatile enough that I can carry just the one lens without missing out on too many shooting opportunities. I've done close-up photos to landscapes all with the same lens. It is fully sealed for weather protection so the weather can't cramp my style & I don't need to carry waterproof bags.
The new version of this lens is the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Pro II.

M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO
The M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 Pro is a zoom lens (80 - 300mm 35mm equivalent). It is also fully sealed for weather protection, has a retractable lens hood, and a detachable tripod mount (again saving weight). It is much smaller and lighter than the equivalent lens power in other brands. This lens is also great for getting shots of birdlife and insects without getting close enough to scare them off. I took this photo of the moon with this lens.

M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60MM F2.8 MACRO
The M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm F2.8 Macro lens is one of my newer acquisitions. It has a splashproof & dustproof construction (weatherproof), and is great in lower light (F2.8).
I'm still mastering this one, but I just took it outside into the garden and took these pics of a poppy tree flower and a fly. |
M.ZUIKO ED 9-18MM F4.0-5.6
My final lens is the wide angle M.Zuiko ED 9-18mm F4.0-5.6. (18 - 36mm 35mm equivalent). It is a compact and super light weight option for hiking - it weights only 155g. It is not weatherproof, making it less useful in wet weather conditions.

Batteries
Don't forget a spare camera battery. I always carry a spare with me - nothing is as frustrating as the perfect photo opportunity and a flat battery.
